As a first-year student in the master’s degree programs in Business and Economics at JGU Mainz, you have the opportunity to apply for the Double Degree Program in cooperation with Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). This study program allows you to complete your master’s studies with two degrees: In addition to the Master degree at JGU Mainz, you will earn a degree at SGH.

Warsaw School of Economics is the leading business university in neighboring country Poland.

Each winter semester, the Double Degree Program with SGH offers five places to master’s students at each institution. Courses at SGH are taught in English.

Possible subject combinations:

  • “Management” at JGU and “Management” at SGH.
  • “Accounting and Finance” at JGU and “Finance & Accounting” at SGH.
  • “International Economics and Public Policy” (MIEPP) at JGU and “Finance & Accounting” at SGH.
  • “International Economics and Public Policy” (MIEPP) at JGU and “Management” at SGH.

Students admitted to the program spend their first year of study in Mainz and their second year (beginning in the winter semester) in Warsaw.

In the first academic year at JGU:

  • 4 Core Modules (4 x 6 LP)
  • 5 Elective Modules (5 x 6 LP)
  • 1 seminar in the Research Module (6 LP)
  • 5 Core Modules (5 x 6 LP)
  • 4 Economic Modules (4 x 6 LP)
  • 1 Research Module (6 LP)

In their second year at SGH, students follow a predefined curriculum of compulsory and compulsory elective courses.

The master’s thesis is normally written within the second year at SGH, where it is credited with 20 ECTS. At JGU it carries 25 credit points, with a further 5 credit points for the associated colloquium. The thesis is written under the legal and academic regulations of the respective institution.

The double degree is awarded to program students of JGU and SGH if the following requirements are met:

  • Study part at JGU: Acquisition of 60 ECTS credits according to the conditions laid down in the collaboration agreement
  • Study part at SGH: Acquisition of at least 40 ECTS credits in the study area “Finance and Accounting” or in the study area “Management”. This is followed by the master’s thesis at JGU (25 ECTS) together with the corresponding colloquium (5 ECTS), or by the master’s thesis at SGH.

Graduates are awarded the academic degree of their home university as well as the corresponding academic degree of the host university. Upon successful completion of the Double Degree Program, students receive degree certificates from both universities, two transcripts of records and two Diploma Supplements.

The participants of the Double Degree Program are selected by the home institution in accordance with selection criteria jointly defined by both institutions. As participation in the Double Degree Program results in an increased workload, only high-performing applicants can be considered in the selection process. Each institution provides 5 study places.

Applicants must meet all admission requirements of the host institution, including language proficiency, and have a good knowledge of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Statistics at Bachelor level.

The language requirements are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  • SGH students: German at level B2 (minimum) and English at level B1 (minimum)
  • JGU students: English at level B2 (proven e.g. by TOEFL, IELTS)
  • There are separate language requirements for Master program in International Economics and Public Policy at JGU.

The host institution reserves the right to reject candidates nominated by the home institution for valid academic reasons.

During their period abroad in Warsaw, participants of the German-Polish Double Master Degree Program generally receive financial support in the form of a scholarship:

  • From the 2026/27 winter semester onwards, participants will benefit from financial support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The scholarship comprises a mobility allowance and a monthly payment, intended to cover the monthly living and health insurance costs.
  • Should individual students not meet the eligibility criteria for the DAAD scholarship, there is the alternative option of funding through the Erasmus program.

Once you have been admitted to the Program, we will guide you through all the necessary steps to obtain the scholarship.

Undergraduate students who meet the entry requirements can use the ‘Pre-Selection’ option to secure a place on the Double Degree Program even before the Master’s degree program begins.

The ‘Pre-Selection’ option is primarily aimed at Bachelor’s students in their final year whose interest in JGU’s Master’s degree programs in business and economics is largely driven by their desire to be accepted onto the German-Polish Double Degree Program with the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH).

Following the application as part of the ‘Pre-Selection’ process, interested candidates will be invited to an interview at an early stage. This enables us to assess in advance whether the applicant is suitable for the Double Degree Program. If accepted, the candidate can then proceed with their application and enrolment for the relevant underlying Master’s degree program within the specified deadline.

Important: Acceptance via the ‘Pre-Selection’ process does not automatically mean admission to the underlying Master’s degree program (M.Sc. Accounting and Finance, M.Sc. Management, M.Sc. International Economics and Public Policy). A separate application is required for this.

Acceptance via the ‘Pre-Selection’ process should be understood as conditional admission to the Double Degree Drogram. Should compulsory course requirements not have been met by the end of the first semester of the Master’s degree program, students must expect to be removed from the Double Degree Program.

In order to apply for this Double Degree Program at JGU, you must be enrolled in the Master degree program in Accounting and Finance, the Master degree program in Management or the Master degree program in International Economics and Public Policy.
