You should have a solid understanding of school-level mathematics from grades 5 through 12 to start your studies in economics successfully. However, taking advanced mathematics in secondary school (e.g. a specialized math course) is not required.
In our experience, students often struggle not with the course content itself, but with gaps or misconceptions in their foundational school mathematics. Challenges typically begin with fractions and solving equations, continue with functions and derivatives, and reach into the basics of linear algebra.
Set yourself the goal of completing the online mathematics bridging course OMB+ (please note: The course is available in German only) before starting your studies. It helps you refresh school-level math and close individual gaps in understanding. All you need is internet access – and a good dose of self-discipline. But that, too, is excellent preparation for your studies.
The online course includes introductions and explanations for each topic area, some of which feature interactive visuals to support your understanding. It also offers plenty of exercises and quizzes, all with personalized feedback and explanations tailored to your specific mistakes. Each of the 10 thematic sections ends with a final test. After passing the comprehensive final test, you can download a certificate – a helpful indicator of your mathematical readiness for studying economics.
Additional support includes virtual tutorials, online forums for group discussions, and a daytime hotline where tutors are available to answer subject-related questions.
If you invest around 60 hours in advance and successfully complete the tests, you can be confident that you’ll be well prepared to actively participate in the first semester of your bachelor’s program in economics.
OMB+ is recommended by more than 40 universities as preparation for degree programs that include mandatory mathematics courses. Its content is based on a catalogue of minimum requirements for university-level mathematics developed by the “Cooperation School–University” working group. The course is funded by the participating universities and is free of charge for you as a student.
OMB+ tutors are available daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.:
- via the hotline: +49 (0)30 6640 7267
- via E-Mail: ombplus@mumie.net
- via Skype: ombplus
- via the integrated OMB+-chat
At the beginning of the winter semester, we also offer an on-campus OMB+ workshop, where a mathematics tutor will be available at all times to help you with any questions. The schedule will be announced during the first “Mathematics” lecture.
