As a first-year student in master degree programs in Economics at JGU Mainz, you have the opportunity to apply to participate in a joint double degree program in cooperation with Szkoła Główna Handlowa (SGH) Warsaw. This study program offers you the opportunity to complete your Master degree with two degrees: In addition to the Master degree at JGU Mainz, you will earn a degree at SGH Warsaw.

Szkoła Główna Handlowa (SGH) Warsaw is the leading business university in neighboring country Poland.

Every winter semester, JGU Mainz and SGH Warsaw offer 5 study places for Master students each within the double degree program. The language of instruction at SGH Warsaw is English.

Possible business subject combinations are:

  • “Management” at JGU with “Management” at SGH
  • “Accounting and Finance” at JGU with “Finance & Accounting” at SGH.

Students in the International Economics and Public Policy Master Degree Program (MIEPP) may also take part in this Double Master Program.

Students admitted to the program spend their first academic year in Mainz and the second year (starting in the winter semester) in Warsaw.

In the first academic year at JGU Mainz:

  • 4 core modules (4 x 6 CP, mainly in winter semester)
  • 5 specialization modules (5 x 6 CP, mainly in the summer semester)
  • 1 seminar in the research module (6 CP, usually in the summer semester)

In the second academic year at SGH Warsaw, students follow a predefined curriculum of compulsory and elective courses amounting to at least 40 ECTS.

The master’s thesis is usually completed at SGH Warsaw, where it counts for 20 ECTS. At JGU, the master’s thesis counts for 25 ECTS credits, plus 5 ECTS credits for the associated colloquium. At SGH, the master’s thesis is usually written in English. Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to write a master’s thesis at JGU Mainz or in German.

The master’s thesis includes an oral defense of said thesis, at JGU this is part of the research colloquium. A summary of the master’s thesis must be submitted in preparation for the oral defense. The oral defense of the master’s thesis is held in the language in which it was written. The preparation of the Master’s thesis is subject to the legal and academic clauses of the respective higher education institution.

The double degree is awarded to program students of JGU Mainz and SGH Warsaw if the following requirements are met:

  • Study part at JGU: Acquisition of 60 ECTS credits according to the conditions laid down in the collaboration agreement
  • Study part at SGH: Acquisition of at least 45 ECTS credits in the study area “Finance and Accounting” or in the study area “Management”. This is followed by the master’s thesis at JGU (25 ECTS) with corresponding colloquium (5 ECTS) or the master’s thesis at SGH.

The academic degree of the home university and the corresponding academic degree of the host university are awarded. After successfully completing the Double Degree Program, the student receives the degree certificates from both universities, two transcripts of records and two diploma supplements. The diploma supplement contains detailed information about the regulations, grades and crediting procedures of the Double Degree Program.

The program participants of the German-Polish Double Master Degree Program are selected by the home institution in accordance with selection criteria jointly defined by both higher education institutions. As participation in the Double Degree Program results in an increased workload, only high-performing applicants can be considered in the selection process. Each higher education institution provides 5 study places.

Applicants must meet all admission requirements of the host institution, including language proficiency, and have a good knowledge of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Statistics at Bachelor level.

The language requirements are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  • SGH students: German at level B2 (minimum) and English at level B1 (minimum)
  • JGU students: English at level B2 (proven e.g. by TOEFL, IELTS)
  • There are separate language requirements for Master program in International Economics and Public Policy at JGU.

The host institution reserves the right to reject candidates nominated by the home institution for valid academic reasons.

In order to apply for this Double Degree Program at JGU, you must be enrolled in the Master degree program in Accounting and Finance, the Master degree program in Management or the Master degree program in International Economics and Public Policy.
